Reminder to Protect Your Pets
National Pet Fire Safety Day is celebrated on July 15th each year to help remind people to consider their pets when creating a fire safety plan for their homes. Our furry (and sometimes scaly) friends are part of our families too, so it’s important that we take time to make sure they stay safe just like us. Below are some pet fire safety tips, courtesy of National Day Calendar and the American Kennel Club.
Fire Safety Tips
- Replace any glass bowls with plastic or metal – outdoor glass bowls that are sitting on wooden decks can actually heat up and start a fire.
- Pets are usually curious – not so cautious. Make sure to extinguish any open flames where you can while your pets are within reach.
- If you have pets in the house, consider using battery-operated candles in comparison to real candles. Wagging tails or curious paws can easily knock down a lit candle.
- If you have a cat, consider cat-proofing the knobs on your stove to ensure that the stove top cannot be turned on when you are not home.
- Keep leashes and any other supplies for your pets near the front door in case everyone needs a quick escape in an emergency.
